Almost everyone who’s read even one of my stories knows that I absolutely love AE86s. However, the one type of car that I love even more than AE86s perhaps is the TE27 Corolla Levin, the grandfather of the AE86. TE27 Corollas were sold in the USA from 1971 to 1974, with four different “minor changes” setting each year apart. While video footage of AE86s is plentiful on the internet, video footage of TE27s is extremely scarce.

Check out this extremely rare footage of the Toyota Team Europe TE27 Corolla Levin (1973 model) being driven at the Lombard RAC Rally event by rally legends (RIP) Hannu Mikkola and Ove Anderson back in 1976. Of course, I have a one track mind, so my focus is on the TE27, but the video also obviously includes other AMAZING vintage RAC rally cars…  namely, Roger Clark‘s extremely popular Cossak Escort RS, Stig Blomqvist‘s Saab and Sandru Munari‘s Lancia Stratos!

The full length video is available as a DVD from RallyFilmsReloaded.co.uk. I think I’ll need to pick up a copy myself!

I am... a nonstop buyer of Japanese car magazines even though I can't read them, a long-time collector of rare steering wheels, horn buttons, deep offset wheels, fresh Kangols, hip hop mixtapes, and vintage Japanese automobilia. My background is in shooting advertisements and editorial photos for print magazines, as well as working with major motion picture studios in Hollywood. I love cars. I have a huge collection of vintage Toyota memorabilia and rare parts to go with all the cars in my collection. My life revolves around photography, cars and car culture. At the same time, I grew up around the culture of hip hop music, with a reverence for graffiti art and underground mixtapes. I've been involved with the emerging drifting scene in the USA since the late 1990s (as a fan), and began working with print magazines all over the world as a photographer in 2003. I eventually decided to travel all over the world to document drifting as it evolved from Japanese subculture to pop culture and authored my first hardcover book, entitled "Drifting: Sideways from Japan to America," in 2006 - the first book ever produced on the topic of drifting. One year later, I was contracted to create the first mass-produced and internationally distributed calendar on the same topic (2008 release). These projects were just a labor of love for me, so I never expected to randomly see my book or calendar on bookshelves and coffee tables in other countries. These projects certainly opened a lot of new doors though, like being contracted to help launch car culture editorial outlets for big corporations, like Speedhunters for EA Games' Need for Speed franchise, Driving Line for Nitto Tire, and NBC Universal's Fast & Furious franchise. Our website and brand has come a long way since it first started in 2009. Since then, we have launched events like 86FEST, V8BUILDS, and MotorMassive.     yeah that Stratos looks so upscale and exotic, whereas the other cars just look awesome and old school. can’t believe those cars all used to compete against each other! bad as video

    Haha, did a search on TE27 on MM and found this vid. Cool! Love the sound the Levin made shooting out of the corner.
    Man, found a ’72 2 dr Sedan Corolla for sale in Bakersfield, but someone jumped on it quick. It’s already gone. ha

    Hey Mr Hecht!

    Don’t get a Corolla SEDAN. If you’re buying a TE27, you want the COUPE body style. It has the shorter roof, and longer trunk lines. Same as my car. It’s the sexier and more appreciated of the 1971-74 Corolla body options! OR you could get a TE28 (Corolla wagon) which is bad ass. :)
