In our newest video on the Motor Mavens YouTube Channel, Top Gear host, Formula Drift Champion, and Volkswagen Red Bull Global Rallycross racing driver Tanner Foust gives us the low down on drifting with his new #V8 #Volkswagen #Passat, working with sponsors, crashing cars, and dealing with failures. Formula Drift has some pretty insane competition cars, with high level builds all over the place. After watching the Formula D New Jersey event, I was pretty shocked when I saw Scion Racing driver Fredric Aasbo win top honors, standing atop the podium with a First Place trophy. The first time I ever saw Aasbo driving at Formula Drift, my honest impression had me thinking, “he drives a Scion tC. Isn’t a tC supposed to be a front wheel drive car?! That thing wasn’t even designed with drifting in mind! How the hell did he manage to compete in Formula D against other top drivers with six figure drift car builds… and he was driving a Scion tC?!”
I guess it all boils down to the strength of the engineering team behind the build. As a new member of the MotorMavens Crew, there were many people in the Formula Drift paddock that I had seen before, but never officially met. When I was first introduced to Stephan Papadakis, the builder of the RWD Scion tC in question, I found myself in the company of an import industry legend, with a long history in motorsports. This dude has been featured in magazines since I was a kid. As the myth of Vin Diesel’s character in the Fast & Furious being based of Stephan lingered in my head, we started shooting. From his street racing background, he developed himself into full blown racing engineer, not to mention record breaking drag times, Papa is the epitome of being a Motor Maven.
Last night, we attended the Scion Racing Pre-SEMA Media Invitational event that promised a sneak peek at the cars entered in the annual Scion Tuner Challenge. Although we enjoyed checking out the three 2014 Scion tCs in the contest, there was clearly one car that stole the show – The GReddy Racing 2JZGTE powered Scion FR-S that was built for Formula Drift star Ken Gushi. COOL!!! Has anyone else noticed all the classic Toyotas used in the television commercial for the 2014 Toyota Corolla??? I got to see a sneak preview of this TV commercial a couple weeks ago when I was in San Diego for the 2014 Corolla’s Official Media Preview and Test Drive, and I’ve been excited to share it ever since! I’m sneaky, so I even shot a few undercover “on the downlow” videos of Toyota’s new TV commercial with my iPad Mini when they weren’t looking – just so I could show my friends! (more…)
Check out the 2015 Subaru WRX from its official world debut at this year’s LA Auto Show. The new WRX is a more powerful and better handling version of Subaru’s iconic high-performance Impreza WRXmodel.Powered by a new 268-horsepower 2.0-liter direct-injection turbo BOXER engine, the 2015 WRX debuts the model’s first six-speed manual transmission and a new, optional performance automatic transmission, the Sport Lineartronic with two manual modes.
With its bold new wide-body sedan design and expanded performance envelope, the 2015 WRX marks a major evolutionary step for the rally-bred performance car that has become a global automotive legend. For 2015, the Subaru WRX employs a new torque-vectoring system that supplements the standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. Torque vectoring allows for improved cornering speeds and handling. The new and stiffer chassis, larger brakes, performance-tuned suspension and a driver-focused interior remain integral to the WRX performance character. The new powertrain also yields higher fuel efficiency than the previous model. (more…)
AMAZING!!! Check out violent high speed drifting at its best, from this helmet-cam video of D1 Grand Prix driver Naoto Suenaga from Team Orange in his missile – an RPS13 Nissan 180SX “battle car.” Most people know Ebisu for its legendary Minami Course (the famous South Course used in D1GP competition), but check out Naoto as he drifts the high-speed Higashi Course (East Course) at Ebisu Circuit in Fukushima Japan. Ever since I first laid my eyes on Singer’s customized interior treatment, I’ve been in love with the Singer Porsche 911. It looks pretty damn perfect in my eyes.
It’s the precise blend of vintage Porsche soul, mixed in with some modern touches that don’t ruin the nostalgic aesthetic of the car. I wish more retro car builders would take notes from the examples that Singer has created! (more…)
There are so many crappy drifting videos on YouTube. This is not one of them. There are also tons of over hyped, overproduced “viral videos” on YouTube. This is not one of those either. While most of the drifting videos on the internet are incredibly lame, THIS video of Ryan Tuerck navigating his way through dense thickets of trees while bouncing off the rev limiter is really a breath of fresh air! (Or should I say… a breath of freshly burnt tire smoke?) (more…)
Could this be the very first Toyota GT86 that has crashed at a racing event? Everyone has been talking about the debut of the Toyota GT86 (Scion FR-S/Subaru BR-Z) in Japan’s D1 Grand Prix Series. Also newsworthy is the fact that Falken Tire was making its return to D1 with this attention grabbing car, which was built by Up Garage, a chain of Japanese used parts stores. (more…)
Just what is BFGoodrich AWESOMECROSS? I asked that very question last month as I found myself wrapped up in a whirlwind of a night-time autocross event out at El Toro Field. Part autocross, part science experiment, part movie set… AWESOMECROSS definitely lived up to it’s name. Also living up to it’s name was the new BFGoodrich g-Force™ Sport COMP-2™.
We’ve seen the new McLaren MP4-12C before here on MotorMavens with Antonio’s coverage of the Beverly Hills McLaren Event and it was unveiled back in September of 2009 as the first production car to be completely designed and built by McLaren since the McLaren F1, but it’s still rare (and beautiful) enough to cause minor disturbances as it weaves sleekly through more mundane traffic.
This video chronicles the MP4-12C’s invasion of North America – with a cameo appearance by a certain McLaren Formula One racing phenom who was arrested in Australia in 2010 for “deliberately losing traction” whereupon he was dubbed a “Hoon” by the Australian Magistrate. We couldn’t possibly make this stuff up! (more…)
Just imagine what it might be like to watch this Prodrive E30 M3 at the Manx Rally in person. Wouldn’t that be AMAZING?! The first time I ever heard of Patrick Snijers was from an BMW E30 drifter named Yoshi Jeffery. In this video, Snijers drives the living hell out of his M3, which was built by Prodrive long before they began their relationship with Subaru! (more…)
“Honda is really all about the engine.” Any real racing enthusiast will be aroused by the sound of a real race car. Listen to the awesome sound of this vintage Honda RA272 Grand Prix car as Dario Franchitti takes the famous – and immaculately kept – Mexico Grand Prix winning car out for a spin. This 1.5-liter V12, 230 horsepower vintage GP racer is the very same car that scored Honda its very first Grand Prix win at the 1965 Mexico Grand Prix, a race won by Richie Ginther.
When Franchitti described his experience with the car, he said the sound of the engine, its precise gearbox, and its unique handling made him think the car was very similar to a motorcycle! (more…)
The Olympus Rally is a legendary event that people used to hear about in the advertising campaigns of big car manufacturers. In the 1980s, big car companies like Toyota, Nissan, Audi and Lancia had factory backed rally teams racing through the backroads surrounding Seattle Washington. It even used to be a leg of the World Rally Championship! That’s right – WRC on US soil!
If you love the glory days of WRC like I do, watch this video, which features cars like the Lancia Delta Integrale, Audi Quattro, Nismo S12 200SX, Toyota Team Europe‘s MA70 Supra and a privateer AE82 Corolla FX-16 GT-S! There’s even a few short clips of Rod Millen driving a Mazda 323 GTX (Mazda Familia) all wheel drive rally car! (more…)
Crashing into water barriers with tandem drifting missile trains through an obstacle course of buildings, fences and concrete walls with their signature don’t give a damn attitude… This is the type of stuff that would NEVER be allowed at a real race event.
The first official installment from Bloodmasters is finally here! Words can’t even describe how amped this video makes me. I can’t decide if I want to break something, or go hit the track and crash into my friends. Perhaps both is in order! Either way, this video is raw, FUN, and awesome. Throw on some denim, grab some sort of weapon, and enjoy the madness! (more…)
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to experience the 24 Hours of Le Mans from a driver’s point of view? I have. This video, sent to me by esteemed British motorsports photographer John Brooks, shows the first lap of the 1995 Le Mans 24 hour race at France’s Circuit de la Sarthe, with Yannick Dalmas at the wheel of the race winning #59 Ueno Clinic McLaren F1. If you’ve never heard of Liberty Walk from Japan, you’d better watch this video immediately. The very first time I ever saw anything on Liberty Walk printed in a US-based publication was in a feature printed in Heavy Hitters Magazine. It immediately caught my attention – not just because of all the exotic Italian cars being driven through the streets of Japan, but also because it told the story of a shop owner who built his business from the ground up, buying and selling cars until he could afford his very first exotic. The story of Liberty Walk is truly inspiring; it is literally a story of rags to riches! (more…)
Put the wildest nor’easters in cars birthed for thrashing, cut them loose on-track, throw in enough denim vests to make any metal-head proud, and you’ve got blood on your hands. Bloodmasters have emerged from the depths, and these savages have fun in a chokehold… relentless on stopping until the world is painted red. (more…)
2011 was a pretty spectacular year of drifting for me. Being a Canadian, I got to see a whole heck of a lot of America this year – not only from all the different rounds of Formula Drift that I and the rest of the Drift Posse participated in, but also as a result of a tour that saw me flying around the country for three months. (more…)
HO LEE SH!!!!!!!!! Drop whatever you’re doing IMMEDIATELY and watch this live action footage of the SuperGT Subaru BRZ GT300 car, which also includes some never seen before footage of the car’s design process. So amazing – I really need to thank Kevin Lawrence from FRS World and BRZ Post for sending me this video early this morning!
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in the DRIVER’S seat, drifting around Irwindale Speedway‘s oval? I asked Ryan Tuerck if he could show us around the track from a driver’s perspective. He was excited to show us how an FD run went down, so we grabbed some cameras and followed him out. Have a look! (more…)
It’s official. Team Yellow is the most awesome grassroots team there is. With at least eight running/driving/drifting/awesome cars at any one time, drivers from all over Scandinavia, and several tracks to lay down ridiculous amounts of smoke, these guys get sh!t done. They’ve got an SR powered AE86, and all their other cars are 2JZ powered. There’s never a dull moment with Team Yellow. Huge thanks to Lars and Dag Harlem for inviting Joe and I over multiple times and even allowing us to drive their 1JZ MarkII. We heart Team Yellow.
Formula D driver Cyrus Martinez might not have the widest wheels or the lowest car or the coolest graphics in the Formula Drift series, but he sure has a whole lot of heart, and people love him for that. He started off as an AE86 Corolla driver, and worked his way up through the ranks, eventually earning his spot in the Formula D series with the Megan Racing drift team. It’s great to see that Cyrus is doing a good job of advancing through the rankings too, with his name being hyped up through the loudspeakers during several exciting tandem battles with top ranked Formula D drivers.
With help from longtime drifting videographer “Camera Steve” Reyes, Cyrus has released a year-end video full of highlights from the season, including some pretty cool footage of Cyrus crashing into walls and such! (more…)
