DRIVER SEAT> Ferrari vs Lambo At Exotics Racing

It doesn't matter if you're male or female; young or old. Everyone loves exotic cars - especially Ferrari and Lamborghini. They're beautiful; they're fast; they're exclusive. Unfortunately for most, this exclusivity stems from the fact that they're also very rare and expensive; some people never even get the chance to drive an exotic super car in their entire lifetime. The lust for exotic automobiles begins when you are a child - every car lover dreams of driving an exotic car, but usually they only get to play with smaller scale toy versions.

Luckily for us, MotorMavens sharpshooter Mike Kim and I were given the rare opportunity to test drive a pair of exotic supercars on a race track at Exotics Racing in Las Vegas! Located just a few freeway exits away from The Las Vegas Strip, Exotics Racing blends all the luxury and service that one expects from a Las Vegas Resort with an amazing supercar driving experience.

To be honest, Mike and I have always thought that test driving cars like the Ferrari 458 Italia, Lamborghini Aventador, Mercedes Benz SLS AMG, Audi R8 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage were out of our price range, so we never really bothered to look into it. Big mistake. As it turns out, our stupid assumptions were wrong. Completely wrong!   Read more...

SHOPAHOLIC> Lambo Lords of the Underground

The name that KC and Kevin Howeth picked for their werks -- Underground Racing – carries more than a whiff of irony today.

Like, how stealth can you be when two of the over-the-top, twin-turbo Lamborghini Gallardos you’ve built for your customers practically own the Texas Mile standing-mile shootout? (Longtime customer Kyle Bennet did 241 mph last summer and Richard Holt’s lighter Superleggera killed the two-fifty mark this past March.)

While the West Coast members of our crew spent the weekend surrounded by Ferraris, MotorMavens sharpshooter James Evins and I visited Underground Racing's Charlotte, NC headquarters last week. Immediately catching James' eye was one of Underground's signature twin-turbo dishes: a 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560 that produces 1150 wheel horsepower on 117-octane racing fuel and 850 wheel horsepower on 93-octane pump gas! That's right, I said ONE THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED FIFTY horsepower.   Read more...

COVERAGE> Top Speed At The Texas Mile

What's up, MotorMavens readers! Before I proceed with the coverage, I'll go ahead and introduce myself. My name is James Evins, and I'm a photographer from Houston, Texas. Like many of you, I've always been a big fan of MotorMavens. When Antonio first approached me about contributing to the site, I jumped at the opportunity. I'm definitely excited to give you guys an inside look at whats going on here in Texas!

This past weekend, I found myself waking up to my alarm at 4:00 AM. After hitting the snooze button about ten times, I finally woke up and dressed and packed my car. I departed before sunrise, making my way out to I-59 and heading South.

Three hours later, I found the "exit" I was looking for - a small, country road with a sign nearby reading, "Goliad Airport." I had arrived at The Texas Mile. As I entered the airport and made my way around the small, rundown control tower I saw the venue sprawled out before me – hundreds of trailers, campers, cars, and bikes spread out across a mile long strip of runway!   Read more...

WEBMINING> Balboni on the Gallardo LP 550-2

From this video on the new REAR WHEEL DRIVE Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2, we understand what Lamborghini’s legendary former test driver Valentino Balboni meant when he told us last week, “It’s a beautiful life behind the wheel of a Lamborghini.”  Balboni said he didn’t even know the rear-driver was in the cards when the company’s engineers started requesting sessions with him, where they would ask him to describe in detail how iconic Lamborghinis like the Countach and Miura handled. Amazing.

NEWSWORTHY> Lamborghini's new RWD Gallardo

You don’t have to have a Harvard MBA to realize that "more" is the four-letter word that drives the exotic supercar market.

More power. More speed. More sex appeal. More exclusivity. And, let’s get real: when folks slide into the driver's seat of an exotic, many of them wind up needing more room -- for their egos.

So what’s up with the latest-and-greatest Lamborghini Gallardo?

As its numeric designation indicates, the new 550-horsepower LP 550-2 Valentino Balboni gives up 10 ponies to the reigning mainstream model, the Gallardo LP 560-4. (Lucky you, if you’re in a tax bracket where a $233,000 car is mainsteam.) The 550-2 takes a couple tenths longer to sprint from zero to 62 mph (3.9 seconds vs. 3.7). The Baboni Gallardo even comes up short in the top speed department: 199 mph vs. a hair under 202 for the 560-4.

If this all sounds, well, backward, no one at Lamborghini will argue with you. If fact Valentino Balboni himself is the first to agree, because the car that bears his name is about going back -- to basics. Basic, in this case, being rear-wheel-drive like the Countach and Miura.   Read more...
