Road Atlanta and
Global Time Attack are a match made in heaven. If you combine a
2.54 mile road course that rolls through the green hills of Georgia with an
open rule set where
maximum speed and
minimum lap times are all that matters, you're bound to have an incredible event.
Thanks to GTA series sponsors like
Continental Tire,
Whiteline Suspension,
Garrett Turbo,
Spec Clutch and
Meister Watches, the battle for Road Atlanta certainly did not disappoint, with new competitors in the mix, newly set
fastest lap records, and even
big crashes!

This past weekend at
Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia, the
Formula Drift Championship celebrated its Ten Year Anniversary. It's hard to believe that the sport of professional drifting has already been in existence in the United States for ten whole years! Crazy - it certainly doesn't feel like it's been ten years.
Over the past decade, there have been a ton of new faces in the traveling Formula D circus - new drivers, new photographers, new teams and sponsors, new models, and new fans. When the very first Formula Drift event was held at Road Atlanta back in 2004, drifting was very much new to the United States. Most people didn't even know what it was. Most of the drivers and teams were very grassroots in appearance; we certainly didn't see the
big corporate event activations and sponsor logos that you find at Formula Drift events nowadays.
Many of the original drivers, models, and teams from the inaugural Formula Drift event in 2004 have moved on to pursue other things. However, there are still a few OG Formula Drift heads (like me) still around. Man, we're getting old!

For two decades, the beautiful Lake Wörthersee vacation area in Reifnitz, Austria has played host to
Volkswagen Audi Group enthusiasts (VAG) from all over the globe in what has become known as the Wörthersee Tour.
Southern Wörthersee, commonly referred to as
SoWo by fans, formed and bore the name as an annual gathering in the Bavarian-themed town of
Helen, Georgia.
The spirit of this gathering is truly authentic as the entirety of this small town honors the tradition. In no other gathering of imports could a clean Evo look out of place! The local restaurants prepare bratwursts and fill steins at a reduced rate and the streets proudly bear the SoWo insignia as European cars arrive from all over the country.

Life has been extremely busy for me in the past several months but, back in June, I caught a ride with some friends out to the Augusta Airport in Thompson, Georgia for the first-ever drift event at the facility. As I am sure anyone who has ever drifted at an airport can attest, the vibe is just unmatched. Planes landing, helicopters buzzing around, cars ripping down the runway at full-lock…there is just something about that you cannot beat.
To me, drifting is the most intense thing you can do in a vehicle. I always try to make my videos reflect that and give everyone a touch of that excitement…even if you have never been behind the wheel of a drift car. If you don’t like death metal, this video might not be for you. But, if you brave what lies ahead, I think you will come out on the other side excited about drifting. (more…)

Right now I'm sitting in the media tower at
Road Atlanta while practice continues just over the hill on the course. That's right, Allen Iverson, we're talkin' about practice! Not the game, but practice. With that being said, even though it
was practice, the drivers were pushing it to the limit and beyond. Many cars ended up in the kitty litter on the initiation corner and some went into the wall.

This weekend will mark the final Southeast Drift event of the season at the newly renovated Gresham Motorsports Park. The practice event “Land of the Great” will run during the day, and then once the sun begins to set – the competition will ramp up. With a $2000 purse awarding $1000 for first – this event is sure to bring out some heavy hitters.
There is something about driving under the lights that I find strangely irresistable. Perhaps it reminds me of my drifting roots sliding under the radar late into the night. If you’re in or around the Atlanta/Jefferson, Georgia area on Saturday – definitely stop by to check out some of the Southeast’s best!
