Formula Drift has some pretty insane competition cars, with high level builds all over the place. After watching the Formula D New Jersey event, I was pretty shocked when I saw Scion Racing driver Fredric Aasbo win top honors, standing atop the podium with a First Place trophy. The first time I ever saw Aasbo driving at Formula Drift, my honest impression had me thinking, “he drives a Scion tC. Isn’t a tC supposed to be a front wheel drive car?! That thing wasn’t even designed with drifting in mind! How the hell did he manage to compete in Formula D against other top drivers with six figure drift car builds… and he was driving a Scion tC?!”
I guess it all boils down to the strength of the engineering team behind the build. As a new member of the MotorMavens Crew, there were many people in the Formula Drift paddock that I had seen before, but never officially met. When I was first introduced to Stephan Papadakis, the builder of the RWD Scion tC in question, I found myself in the company of an import industry legend, with a long history in motorsports. This dude has been featured in magazines since I was a kid. As the myth of Vin Diesel’s character in the Fast & Furious being based of Stephan lingered in my head, we started shooting. From his street racing background, he developed himself into full blown racing engineer, not to mention record breaking drag times, Papa is the epitome of being a Motor Maven.
Seriously though, this year’s Formula Drift Finale was one of the greatest weekends of my life. All the media, drivers, and industry people I’ve met over the last few years all in one place to be a part of arguably the greatest drifting spectacle in US history. I say “arguably,” but I will fight you. FD Irwindale 2011 was the best thing ever. Period. (more…)
Now that you’ve heard the story behind and seen all the amazing photos from Formula Drift Las Vegas, courtesy of Oliver Petalver and Mike Kim, take a quick moment to wipe the drool from your keyboards and prepare yourselves for a short video from myself and Joe Ayala. (more…)
In addition, this past event made people do a double take as FD Asia drivers Adwitya "Dio" Amandio & Saranon "Non" Pornpatanarak each made their U.S. debut. There was also a bit of controversy as Justin Pawlak switched seats with Tyler McQuarrie in the Falken Tire Nissan 350Z while McQuarrie piloted JTP's Falken Tire Nissan S15 instead.
All in all, with a nail biting points race, Rhys Millen back on the podium, new faces, and driver crossovers, you can see how someone might say that Vegas was the place to be this past weekend! Read more...
This evening, Justin Shreeve, Will Roegge, and I went to the unveiling party for Scion Racing’s 2011 tC Formula Drift competition cars, driven by Kenshiro Gushi and Fredric Aasbo. It was awesome! Great food and free drinks are hard to disagree with, especially when amongst the great company that attended. A lot of automotive industry folks were in attendance, so it seemed just like a SEMA Party without the Las Vegas atmosphere. (more…)
When David at Tokico Performance Shocks asked me to do a promotional video of Tanner Foust in the Rockstar, AEM, Papadakis Racing, Scion tC for their SEMA booth, I couldn’t have been more excited. I knew I had tons of great footage of the always impressive, consistently consistent Tanner Foust.
This video represents a year of phenomenal driving by one of the most loved competitors on the Formula Drift circuit.
On a side note, the artist of the original track I cut this video to decided not to give us the rights to the song. Therefore, an employee of Tokico had to produce this new track at the last minute and I had to re-edit the video right at the deadline! I hope you enjoy the final product and please let me know if you see it at SEMA!
