COVERAGE> Speed&Stance Swarms SpeedVentures

This weekend's inaugural Speed&Stance meet was crazy!!! I can't believe so many people turned up to the event, because we organized and promoted the entire thing in only five days. FIVE DAYS! Thanks to our friends at Speed Ventures, we were able to throw this gigantic car event in the parking lot of Auto Club Speedway in Fontana!

We advertised the meet to run between 12 noon and 5pm, but every single one of the infield parking lots at the speedway were FULL by 2:45pm! There was a crazy line of cars backed up from the infield parking, through the tunnel, wrapping all the way around to the Cherry Avenue entrance! I was told that once the parking lots allocated to the event hit capacity, the people at the gates had to turn away well over 100 cars! Insane.

Since traffic and road congestion became an issue, the good folks from Auto Club Speedway quickly opened up a couple more parking lots so that cars could pre-stage before rolling in to the actual show area, which saw both autocross and high speed road racing with Speed Ventures on the ROVAL course, and a beginner level car control clinic for Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ owners called the 86 Dynamic Driving Academy.   Read more...

GALLERY> Autocon At Santa Anita Racetrack

This weekend's Autocon event at Santa Anita Racetrack was hot. Super hot. There were lots of other car events happening in other parts of the west coast, but it seemed as if most people naturally just flocked to Autocon, because it's a new event series that's gaining some good momentum. It was initially started as a smaller car gathering in Southern Cali's City of Industry, but it has seen quite a bit of growth recently. I even saw some of the core team from the old Hot Import Nights (the crew that was behind HIN when it was strongest) and Global Time Attack behind the scenes this weekend.

I've been traveling out of state for the past few weeks, but I decided to fly back to Los Angeles for this weekend's event - it was the perfect chance to enjoy summertime in Southern Cali, spend time with good friends, and finally check out Autocon in person.   Read more...

COVERAGE> Wheelspotting At Wekfest Long Beach

Long Beach is quickly becoming one of my favorite venues for automotive events. This weekend, our friends from Weksos Industries made the trek down to Los Angeles to hold yet another Wekfest event in Southern Cali. Even though the event is pronounced "weak-fest" and their company name is pronounced "weak sauce," the turnout was anything but weak. Lowlife car owners from all over California and Nevada scraped their oilpans all the way to the Queen Mary to show off their first class wheel fitment.   Read more...

COVERAGE> It’s JDM Yo! Anniversary In Cerritos

Over a year ago, when you heard the phrase 'It's JDM Yo!' you would just think of a bunch of Japanese cars with parts from Japan following a trend. Now, as soon as you hear it, the first thing that comes to mind are the hot models and Tony 'It's JDM Yo' Lee with his posse at every major car show representing. The meet turned out more like a car show but with free entrance and in and out privileges for both people and cars. With vendors, food trucks, free NOS Energy Drinks to quench your thirst, and lots of eye candy the day went by without a hitch. A raffle, emceed by Tony and Miss Natalia Marie from NOS, was held and proceeds went to help fund Big Abe's daughter Sophie's funeral cost (if you don't know who Big Abe is, he's the guy with the big ass rim hanging from his neck). I have to give a big shout out to Big Abe for showing up to the meet after going through what he and his family had to endure.   Read more...

CENTER STAGE> Fresh & Clean BMW E30 in Atlanta

Cleanliness, it seems, is a bit of a relative term. Whether you are following Webster's definition or the definition that has been popularly sculpted within the car scene, there are varying degrees of what could be considered a clean car. There even seems to be some disagreement as to what exactly that means. Is it the application of the owner's taste? Is it the degree to which he has maintained his vehicle? Is it keeping a simplistic/minimalist approach or just doing things right over all? CARSPOTTING> Lowdailys British BMW On Bags

Sometimes in life it's nice to get out of your usual comfort zone and experience something new. I've been involved with and have been shooting drifting for a good few years now and I've reached a point where the excitement to go out and shoot it isn't as great as it used to be. So a few weeks ago I decided that this year I'm taking a little step back from drifting to go capture and expand my knowledge of other car cultures in the UK. If I'm honest I'd been so caught up in my little smoke filled drifting world that I'd almost forgotten that the UK is home to just SO much in the way of car culture. For such a small country it's crammed with automotive goodness, and I'd like to do my best to bring more of that goodness to MotorMavens readers from around the world.

All I needed was my first chance to do something new - and that chance recently came in the form of this BMW E46 3 series owned by Josh Mussell of the Lowdailys crew.   Read more...

COVERAGE> Bisimoto Drag Hondas at Qdoba

Those that are following MotorMavens on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr probably already know that our friends from Bisimoto Engineering invited us out to the grand opening of the new Qdoba Restaurant in Ontario yesterday. When we arrived out at the restaurant, the parking lot was packed, and there were no spots to park anywhere nearby. We just double parked the E39T alongside the trailer, and were immediately greeted by the always smiling Bisi Ezerioha, the charismatic drag racer and engine tuner that you might have seen in our off-the-cuff Norm Reeves Honda Meet video feature.

A lot of people were crowded around the Bisimoto Honda Insight drag car and the hoodless 700hp D16Z powered Civic wagovan that Bisi drives on the street (Sshhhhh! We hope that we don't have any cops reading this!). Luckily, we were able to use our MotorMavenly powers of persuasion (or coercion) to ask people to move out of the way for just a little bit so we could reposition the cars and snap these photos!   Read more...

WEBMINING> Offset Offensive from Toronto

Man. I’m not quite sure what to say. I was forwarded this link from a friend of mine, who basically said, “dude, you gotta read this. This article bashes slammed cars, negative offset, and the usage of roof racks and rusted body parts. It even bashes websites that promote that style (specifically naming HellaFlush), Miata.net and other forums.”

At first, I thought, “That sucks, but whatever… people talk shit on the internet all the time just to spike up their traffic or make a name for themselves.” But then I re-read the email. It talks shit about Corollas?! More specifically, it refers to our beloved AE86 Corollas (other cars are on the list too) as “irredeemable garbage.” Wow. That’s a pretty bold statement.

For most of the people I’ve been hanging out with for the past 10 years, talking shit about a person’s car is worse than talking shit about a person’s family. In many circles, those are fighting words. While I like to think that I’ve grown up a bit, and I like to think it doesn’t bother me when people disparage the cars I have been passionate about for the past decade… I think, perhaps, I haven’t grown up. I sure haven’t “grown out of it” – I haven’t grown out of my passion for AE86s; for negative offset wheels; for demon camber; for low stanced cars; for stretched tires… hell no. If anything, I’ve become happy that people are embracing this style, and seeing people all over the world build cars of this type is only adding fuel to the fire.

Perhaps the most offensive statement made by this article is the one that belittles the young demographic of car enthusiasts. It says “Setting up a car for drifting is usually ass-backwards to what actually makes a car handle. Still, it has managed to permeate the collective consciousness of young car enthusiasts, who are unaware that buying coilovers with absurdly stiff springs doesn’t actually make a car handle well, but rather masks a the deficiencies of a poorly designed car.” Come on now. Young car enthusiasts are unaware of what they’re doing? Last time I checked, MOST people (note that I didn’t say ALL, but MOST) involved with drifting were modifying their cars with a purpose and a mission.

COVERAGE> HellaFlush Scrapes Buttonwillow, Pt.2

I know you've been waiting for it, so here's the second installment in our HellaFlush 3.5 event coverage from Buttonwillow Raceway. I'm not sure that there have ever been this many cars with aggressive fitment and stance at the Lerdo Highway exit off the California Interstate 5 highway.

Honestly, I gotta give props to all the Northern California people who came down to this event. Not only does it show that Northern Cali folks are super down and committed, but it was also great to see a lot of cars come out of the woodwork that we normally don't see on blogs and websites. I'd love to expand the MotorMavens reach from doing mostly Southern California events all the time, but it really is kind of difficult as we're doing this as privateers, and we don't have a big corporate budget of several hundred thousand dollars to spend each year like some of the other blogs out there. However, we're resourceful, so we will keep trying to break boundaries, and keep doing our best with the Macaroni-and-Cheese/Cup-o-Noodle budget that we currently have.
