COVERAGE> Japanese Classic Car Show in LBC

Every year, one of my favorite events to attend in Southern California is the annual Japanese Classic Car Show in Long Beach. JCCS is like a big reunion of old school friends, surrounded by the finest pre-1990s vehicles made in Japan. The water surrounding the iconic Queen Mary cruise ship and the Downtown Long Beach skyline is a perfect backdrop for Skylines, 510s, Zs, Celicas, Corollas, Starlets, Land Cruisers, RX7s, RX3s, Civics and all sorts of other interesting Japanese old school cars!   Read more...

COVERAGE> 2013 Formula D Tech Day & Car Meet

Formula Drift always holds a Preseason Technical Inspection Day before the annual race season starts. The objection of the tech inspection is to go over each car to verify that all safety equipment and chassis modifications are fair and accounted for. When it comes to building a race car, whether its for drift, drag, road racing or rally, safety has to be a high priority for any team. Source Interlink Media was the host of this year's tech day. This was a free event to attend for those enthusiasts and fans who want to get up close and personal with the cars and drivers. They had food trucks, free energy drinks, and of course, lots of local car show enthusiasts and their rides in attendance!   Read more...

RANDOM DOPE> MSD Ignition Amp Retro Redux

MSD 6AL ignition amplifier 40th Anniversary retro Old School Look limited Vintage Classic Car Period Correct nostalgic nos 1970

It’s no secret that I and the rest of the MotorMavens Crew have a certain affinity for old school cars; especially cars from the 1960s and 1970s. When it comes to modifying a car from this era, I personally find it extremely important to retain the car’s old school look and personality. After all, the retro character is what I like most about a nostalgic car!

For those interested in making tasteful upgrades to their vintage vehicles in a period correct fashion, the ignition experts from MSD have released a limited edition retro redux version of their popular MSD 6AL ignition amplifier to celebrate the company’s 40th Anniversary! This 40th Anniversary 6AL amp features all the spark amplification power and features of their current 6AL model, but has the vintage MSD logo from 1970 on the outer casing. COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL. COVERAGE> Wekfest Weekend in J-Town SF, Pt.1

This past weekend, I went up to San Francisco to hang out with some of my old school friends from the Bay Area... but unfortunately a lot of them were out of town! Hawaii, Japan, Philippines... damn! Sometimes I have such bad timing! It was a good thing Calvin Wan was in town - he told me he had two events that he needed to attend that weekend. He needed to bring his FD3S RX7 to a motorsports show in Vallejo, and then bring his S14 Silvia (it really is a RHD Silvia from Japan) to the Wekfest Car Show in Japantown San Francisco. I've been hearing about (and seeing pictures of) the annual carshow in San Francisco's Japantown for quite some time, but this weekend was the very first time I had ever had a chance to attend it myself. I think in the past it used to be called the JDM Theory J's Gathering, but apparently they decided to rename it Wekfest (pronounced like 'weak-fest'). Or it could be that the organizers are different now? Not sure.

Anyway, the Weksos Wekfest event was pretty crazy... TONS of cars, TONS of people in attendance, and a line of impatient people that stretched around the block. Seriously... that was a pretty long line!   Read more...

WEBMINING> Hawaii Loves Old School Toyotas

Things have been extremely busy for the Motor Mavens Crew over the past two weeks. We’ve been turning our attention to some general “housecleaning” operations and important meetings to plan for future expansion of the site. Unfortunately, these things were extremely time sensitive and had to take priority over website updates for the past week. Pretty wack, I know. We should be back to our usual schedule after this; thanks for being patient and for your continual support!

We have some cool features to post this month, but before we get into all that, I wanted to turn your attention to the 808 state for a bit. This past weekend, many of my friends from Hawaii’s island of Oahu got together for an Old School Toyota meet. People might not realize it, but there are lots and lots of really amazing cars in Hawaii. All the local braddahs over there have much love for vintage Japanese cars.

Just look at how many clean TE27s came out to the meet! I’m drooling over two especially… a particular blue 1973 1600SR and a clean orange 1973 1600SR. More on these cars in the near future!

Props to Justindabull for his video work. Justin is really, really young (still in high school?), but he’s been hanging out with all the old school Toyota guys in Hawaii for years, because his dad, Mike, has owned some pretty awesome vintage Toyotas. Good job Justin! And congrats on getting your video featured on MotorMavens! Can’t wait to see you all again!

Shoots!

COVERAGE> Garage Zero in Atlanta

The guys at Georgia-based Garage Zero had an open-house to their newly-acquired facility located just outside Atlanta's perimeter. Aren't familiar with Garage Zero? Well, it is time you get acclimated. These guys are all about old school Japanese car lifestyle and culture. To put it in simpler terms, these guys make "keeping it real" seem pass√©. Their new facility houses an eclectic mix of classics and wild project-cars.   Read more...

WEBMINING> Toyota Team Europe & 1976 RAC Rally

Almost everyone who’s read even one of my stories knows that I absolutely love AE86s. However, the one type of car that I love even more than AE86s perhaps is the TE27 Corolla Levin, the grandfather of the AE86. TE27 Corollas were sold in the USA from 1971 to 1974, with four different “minor changes” setting each year apart. While video footage of AE86s is plentiful on the internet, video footage of TE27s is extremely scarce.

Check out this extremely rare footage of the Toyota Team Europe TE27 Corolla Levin (1973 model) being driven at the Lombard RAC Rally event by rally legends (RIP) Hannu Mikkola and Ove Anderson back in 1976. Of course, I have a one track mind, so my focus is on the TE27, but the video also obviously includes other AMAZING vintage RAC rally cars…¬† namely, Roger Clark‘s extremely popular Cossak Escort RS, Stig Blomqvist‘s Saab and Sandru Munari‘s Lancia Stratos!

The full length video is available as a DVD from RallyFilmsReloaded.co.uk. I think I’ll need to pick up a copy myself!

Enjoy!
