COVERAGE> AutoCon Show at El Toro Air Base

AutoCon 2011 turned out to be a pretty fun show - it has grown quite a bit since the last show they had. I drove all the way down from LA to El Toro Airbase in Irvine, CA so that I could start shooting the carshow roll-in at 10am, but they didn't allow any media to enter the show until 12pm! This definitely put a damper on my plans, because the rest of the normal spectators would be entering the venue at the same time as media. The scheduling issue left me pretty disappointed to be honest, since my original plan was to shoot roll-in and staging before the large crowds showed up, then meet up with Antonio Alvendia and Oliver Petalver at Irwindale Speedway. I didn't make it out to Irwindale because of the scheduling mix-up, but I still enjoyed the rest of the day at the show. This event looks like it's getting bigger and bigger!   Read more...

OH SNAP> Link YOUR Mitsubishi Owner’s Day Pics

Mitsubishi Owners Day Chaba1Love Charlene Barnum Dianna Lushus MotorMavens DSPORT Evo IX X 9 10 Lancer Mirage Eclipse Starion

Oh snap! We’re still working on compiling and posting all the photos we took at Mitsubishi Owners Day 2011 at the Mitsubishi corporate offices in Cypress CA. I got to the event super early, mostly because our good friend Brian Urbano from Mitsubishi kept hyping the event online through Twitter, Facebook, and direct text messages to us, saying… “Yo! Are you coming? It’s gonna be soooo fun!”

The event definitely WAS fun, but I’ll be honest. I screw up sometimes. I was so concerned with picking up a friend and getting to the event on time, I forgot to put my memory card case in my camera bag! #FAIL!!! Yup, I know. LOSERRRR. Good thing one of our MotorMavens shooters, Horacio Flores, owns a Mitsubishi Evo X! He showed up to the event later in the day and took some photos for the site! Whew… he saved me from my royal screw up! (more…)

VIDEO> Millen Is Still Killin’

Alright, so I just finished my edit of the Formula Drift Finale at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, California and it’s going to take FOREVER to render/export/upload. Until that finishes, I thought I would whet your appetites by releasing a [very] short teaser. I created this sequence of the incredibly talented and consistent Rhys Millen while learning the work flow of an amazing plugin for my editing software, which allows one to slow down the speed of footage to an unbelievable rate. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

GUEST BLOG> Eurowerkz BMW 330i E90 & Z4M

As soon as Chad from Eurowerkz told us his Eurowerkz R3DBULL BMW 330i E90 was ready for a photo shoot (and that he had found the perfect place for it), Johan from WSTO literally stopped everything he was doing and left for a solo drive to Minneapolis Minnesota. Starting out late in the afternoon from WSTO headquarters with nothing more than a toothbrush and his camera equipment, he braved the hellish seven-hour drive from Chicago IL to Minneapolis MN. Actually, the drive isn't really bad at all - except for, in this case, the tornado alerts and huge thunderstorms. Not good.

Arriving around midnight, Johan met up with the gus from Eurowerkz at Auto MotorPlex - an enthusiast's dream. It's a private garage built to your own specifications. Whether you're there for storage or a little wrench work, the environment is specifically engineered to engender the height of personalization and comfort - the space feels uniquely designed for your car and yourself. There's even a lounge and a club house for residents. Very cool! Of course, this called for a night shoot - even though he was still drained from the drive through Hades to get there.   Read more...

COVERAGE> Big Guns at Formula D New Jersey

Formula Drift at Wall Speedway in New Jersey was definitely fun to watch. For me, it's always fun to travel and attend all the events in the tour, but this past weekend, I had some other commitments and couldn't make it to New Jersey. Luckily for us all, Larry Chen was out in New Jersey representing MotorMavens and capturing all the action!

Thanks to our friends at YoParts and Belle 1 Communications, we were able to watch Formula D live; the DriftStream live feed was really fun and entertaining! It was like an old school AOL chat room with tons of drifting fans blurting out information and opinions; I was impressed at how many people got involved in the live chat, cheering for (and sometimes clowning) drivers and teams! All in all, it was super fun - and I quite honestly was pretty disappointed that I had to shut down my computer in the middle of the Top 16 so that I could drive to my friend's house for a party/bbq (it was my fault - I should have just driven over there early so I could watch the entire thing at his house).

Wall Speedway is a pretty interesting track. It was originally built for circle track cars, but somehow was able to re-purpose itself for drifting, thanks to a lot of phone calls, legwork, and planning by the Formula Drift staff. Wall Speedway is also the most extreme banking that Formula Drift competition cars run on, with the most extreme sections of the track being 30 degrees - a really big difference in comparison to Irwindale Speedway's 18 degrees of incline.   Read more...

NEWSWORTHY> Farewell, Atsushi Kuroi

I awoke this morning to the buzz of my iPhone, and struggled to wipe my sleep-deprived eyes so that I could read what was on the screen. Apparently, the text messages were from my friends Stephen and Mayumi, who regrettably informed me of bad news that was delivered via email from D1 driver Kazuya Bai in Osaka.

Last night, D1GP driver Atsushi Kuroi from legendary Osaka drift team Tinker had a deadly accident while he was riding his motorcycle. Although there aren't too many details known about the accident, Kuroi san's kohai (apprentice) Kazuya Bai says that Kuroi's thigh was apparently injured from the accident, and even though the hospital staff worked diligently to stabilize him, Kuroi san's wounds were too severe, and he passed away within four hours of arriving at the hospital.   Read more...

WEBMINING> Kawabata's Unbelievable Entry!

I’ve had to watch this video of Kawabata drifting his Toyo Tires S13 in Japan over and over and OVER again at least 10 times just to see if it was somehow a fluke or even possibly faked! When you watch this video, you’ve GOT to agree that he nailed down an absolutely unbelievable entry!

I’m utterly speechless, just shaking my head in bewilderment… so please help me out here and comment below! Wasn’t his entry into that corner just NUTS?! Also, does anyone know which circuit that was? At first I thought it might be Sugo Sportsland, but after watching it again, I don’t think so…
